We have multiple Postdoc and PhD position openings at Stevens Institute of Technology, funded by Public Service Enterprise Group (PSEG), focusing on Energy Efficiency and Utilization at all levels of power and energy systems. The positions are available as early as Spring 2021.
Position Description:
The project focuses on data analytics, stochastic and dynamic optimization, systems modeling, and data-driven control approaches to explore energy efficiency and utilization of transmission and distribution networks, connected cities and communities, smart buildings, and individual consumers.
Examples of interested research topics include:
• Developing mathematical modeling, simulation, and optimization approaches to improve the operational efficiency of electricity transmission and distribution systems;
• Investigating market frameworks to support peer-to-peer energy transactions and tailor incentive mechanisms while maintaining the operability and reliability of the power grid and energy distributed systems;
• Analyzing real-time optimal behavior to augment building efficiencies in conjunction with smart metering and to enhance community resiliency via smart microgrids.
The successful candidate will have a strong background in power systems, renewable energy, or mathematical modeling, simulation, and optimization. Past experience on smart and connected communities, microgrid modeling, monitoring, and control, and building energy management are especially encouraged to apply.

Dr. Wu (lei.wu@stevens.edu)
Dr. Lei Wu is a Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Stevens Institute of Technology. He was a Professor with the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, Clarkson University, Potsdam, NY, USA till 2018. He received early promotion twice at Clarkson: from Assistant to Associate Professor, and from Associate to Full Professor. He received the B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering and the M.S. degree in Systems Engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University, Xi’an, China, in 2001 and 2004, respectively, and the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), Chicago, IL, USA, in 2008. He was a senior research associate at the Robert W. Galvin Center for Electricity Innovation at IIT during 2008-2010. He worked as summer Visiting Faculty at NYISO in 2012.
He is the recipient of Transactions Prize Paper Award from the IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) in 2009, and the IEEE PES Student Prize Paper Award in Honor of T. Burke Hayes as adviser in 2014. He is the receipt of NSF CAREER Award in 2013 and IBM Smarter Planet Faculty Innovation Award in 2011. He serves as Editor for several internationally recognized journals, including the IEEE Transactions on Power System and the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy. He is an IEEE senior member.
His primary research and teaching areas are focused on power and energy system optimization and control, with specific interests in the modeling of large-scale power systems with a high penetration of demand response and renewable energy, and community resilience microgrid.
